Working to live, definitely. I've never heard of anyone putting on their tombstone "I wish I'd spent more time at work"......but I've heard plenty say they wish they'd spent more time with their family.

In my life, it seems that years birth through 21 took 100 years to pass by.....but the years 22-46 have zipped by in a minute.

I'm in that "finding my calling" mode right now.....I look back at my work life and don't really find that I've made much of a difference. I've been successful but I've not done anything someone else couldn't have done. But I look back at my non-work life and see lots of things that I've done that have made a difference. I think I've made my spouse's life better, my kids life better, my family's life better. Like George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life", I can see how I've touched many people personally. But I don't really see that professionally, but hope to find that balance in the near future.

Everybody is free to decide how much time to spend on work/life & family.
For me work is important to develop your skills, meeting people, exchanging ideas, but family is also very important. A good balance is certainly a wise choice.

Work is an important part of my life, as well as, it is a mean to improve myself, building relations, and having money.
So we work to have money, we need money to satisfy many needs, we satisfy needs to achieve part of happiness.
So it a circle, in which work is important, family is important, health is important, friends are important, knowing God is important, self-confidence also, and rest etc,... work time for work, family time for family..
The core point is to know how you control your life, to be organized, to know what to do, and when to do, to know how to use your time, to know how to manage your life and be the leader and the controller, not to be a slave for anything except God, to know how to be Free and Successful, how to love and beloved...

Both, but in general I live to work and I enjoy it. I love what I'm doing, and it gives me a great pleasure to work hard, achieve my goals, and develop myself professionally and personally. That makes me happy (i.e. I also work to live!), and this is my work-life balance.

Hi Gustavo,

Well, for me, my work is not detached from my life. The harder I work; the more I live.

Right now finding a rewarding job takes precedence, but that doesn't mean I've put enjoying my life on hold, only that I must forgo some of the luxuries, such as travel. It's essential to find a balance of sorts, no question.

Right now I`m living to find work......

That situation apart, life`s a balance between work, family, health, spiritual, social and educational aspects.

If we focus not on all equally, our life`s out of balance and sooner or later we`ll feel empty.

I`d better rephrase the question - because living to work is as onesided and out of balance as working to live.

I think you need a work/life balance as both provide essential benefits. Income aside, work you enjoy and are productive at can certainly provide a sense of pride and accomplishment. Life gives you a release from the stresses of day to day work, hopefully, as well as variety, which to me keeps life interesting and entertaining.

I work to live. However, due to circumstances, work is taking too many hours of my day. This is a temporary situation, only during 2009.

Honestly...

Right now I am living to work! However I know that to complete a Masters Degree in one year and get academic awards, plus working full time is not a 'normal' phase of life. Life WILL change !

My work-life balance is really just work-balance - but its a phase of growing/learning and 'sewing the seeds' for future rewards.

That's my 2 cents Gustavo.

It is like the chicken and egg story. which one came first whether it is the chicken or the egg. I am living and I am working. both are independent of other. With out the work also people are living.
